McBroom’s L shape smoker idea...

Post by McBroom » September 10th, 2019, 9:40 am

I’m beginning to attempt an L shape smoker.

I’ve got the general idea in my head of how I want it.

The vertical tank is roughly 50/60 gal propane tank
(14” dia X40”tall) the air tank firebox(horizontal)is aprox 14” X 17”deep
It’ll have a flat end on it with a top opening door. 3”X??chimney.
A 2”X5” air intake.
Q:1. How do I figure the throat as it’s an oval shape?
Q:2. How far up should I put the 1st shelf? I’d like to have 5 or 6 shelves
Q:3. How far up off the ground is a safe distance for the firebox? 12”??

I know I’ll have more questions.
Here’s the first few pictures.
Please Help me out.

I don't have any experience with a design like this so I'm not sure how much help I can be. The first thing that comes to mind when I see the pictures is that you'll need to make sure that you have some way to keep the grease out of the FB or it could be a disaster. I would think that 12'' of clearance would be the minimum for the FB. The stack doesn't need to be very long because the CC being vertical will act as the stack. I've never been very good with figuring out the area of different shapes so I can't help you with that. The height of the first shelf will probably depend on whether or not you have some type of baffle to shield the meat from the direct heat.

Definitely will have a baffle I’m still drawing sketches for the grease drain system which my first draft is plates an inch or so under each rack to a drain pipe on the side leading to the bottom where the valve is located. It will be away from the firebox throat. I think I said that right??
