DDave's Reverse Flow Build

Post by DDave » January 23rd, 2018, 10:27 pm

I've been spending the weekend teaching myself AutoCAD and working with various SmokerBuilder Calcs to come up with some plans.

If anyone is willing to take a look I would appreciate any feedback you have to offer. Currently there is no shadow plate but I am not opposed to adding one. I just didn't know about them until I started reading here. :-)

Looks good to me. You really don't need a grease dam at the FB in a RF but it won't hurt anything.

If it's tourist season, how come I can't shoot 'em?

The ends are off.

Doesn't look too nasty on the inside.

It is officially 19.5 inside diameter so I will re-run the numbers and go from there. :-bd

Inside getting cleaned up.

Holes from miscellaneous fittings patched and door mostly cut.

Hinges should be here tomorrow so strapping will go on and the door will be cut the rest of the way next week.

Then on to the baffle plate and fire box.

I have seen some people who welded the flanges and hinges on the door before cutting it all the way out. Some time the door will warp not because the way you cut it but because the way the cylinder was made. The stress can be stored until released by cutting it out. I said all that to say its easier to bend the door back into shape without the flange and while not welded.

Yeah, the metal shop teacher mentioned seeing that "after cut" warp issue with spiral welded pipe. This cylinder started life as a square piece of sheet steel and the seam runs parallel to the length of the chamber. But I think the plan is to just weld the top (and maybe bottom?) flange and hinges on then cut the rest of the door out then work on the side flanges. He is a smokerbuilder.com and weldingweb.com forum reader so I think he is aware of the pitfalls.

And since I don't know jack shit about metal working, I am hesitant to give him any welding "tips". :-) I am generally restricting my input to design considerations. :-)

More progress pics.

Lid cut, hinges welded, baffle plate in place and partly welded in.

Nice snug fit on the door. Did not try to twist, warp or go anywhere.

Nice work. Great the door did not warp. That seems to be norm so count yourself lucky... :D
