@Rodcrafter..... I am just incredibly spoiled by my g/f (20+ years this time around.... but that's a story for a tasty beverage or three....) she got me hooked on home brewing, I now have a 4 tap kegerator in the media room. And she's quite happy that I'm starting on this smoker project although she put the serious kibosh on the 250 gallon propane tank conversion. Truth be told.... I think I'm gonna be happier with this one anyway.

I too homebrew. Dual tap kegerator. Wine and beer. If the feds will legalize it I would make small batch bourbon.

Started putting the hardware on and the cook chamber door wont shut flush with the gasket. Gotta put the bar clamps on and readjust the bullet hinges. :hissy:

<pulls up a chair> Crud. That's something that makes me nervous. And you just put that purty coat of paint on.

Gotta be noon somewhere. I'd offer you a tasty beverage... or would that potentially make things worse? :)

Is what it is. Rather deal with it now.

I have to ask, how is it out of alignment? is the door twisted out of plane? Is an edge lifted?

The gasket is too thick. Creates a wedge when trying to close so one side seals and the other is loose.

Ah.... Common wisdom here I thought was to use a 1/8" spacer before welding on the doors. I haven't looked closely at the gaskets I have (large parts kit from BBQ Supply.) I guess alternatively I could apply the gaskets & clamp them down before mounting the hinges, but paint becomes problematic.

I used a spacer but it must not have been thick enough. It won't take long to fix just another thing to do.

<scratches head> Maybe..... at least on the cook chamber door, affix the gasket with painter's tape to the body and compress it down with bar clamps. That'd be not too horribly hard. That'd be more of a problem with the firebox door and the charcoal chute door, though, there's no good way to get a good even clamp around the door.

Don't mind me, I'm just leaving brain droppings. And commiserating. I'm gonna try to not have to cut anything apart and put it back together when I'm building mine.

That's the plan. Bit of an issue with the other doors but the latch compresses everything enough. The slam latch just doesn't have enough resistance to make the cook chamber seal to my satisfaction

I added a latch to the top of my Gf, as I have a similar situation. It seals the door very nicely now. When I can get around to it,I will redo the door but for now I'm happy with it.

I contemplated an additional latch, but I dont want to mess with it much after I call it done.

If you used 1/4” gasket put 1/8” on it instead.

Still looks like a nice paint job. How long did it take to cut the bullets off & reweld?

I just cut the top bullet that was welded to the cook chamber. Took 15-20 minutes to adjust and weld back on.

I also put a few beads of weld on the door frame where the seal wasn't as tight.Image

That's not bad for time, but if you only adjusted your top hinge, I'd bet your door is a little twisted now. :( OTOH, if you've got a good seal.... go smoke some food. :)
