Saw this on another site and thought it was cool.

Uses a fairly large spring behind the smoker with another turnbuckle.


If it's tourist season, how come I can't shoot 'em?

That is truly cool! I racked my brain for quite a while trying to come up with something different than the standard counter weight system and finally gave up.

I would be afraid of one of those springs breaking. That door would come down so fast.....

Definitely cool idea tho.

the stress on the springs is minimal. about 25% of their rated capacity. in the up position the doors would not fall down if a spring breaks they would stay in place open. the springs are more likely to break when the doors are closed as that's when the springs are extended. I was more concerned about the spring breaking and flying off and hitting someone but they are attached to make that improbable.
