Old country pecos complete rebuild

So I got this old country bbq off Facebook marketplace a couple years back. It wasn’t in good shape but I tried doing what I could to get the most out of it. That being said about 6months ago the firebox ended up having a few holes so that’s when I decided to do a complete rebuild and learn to weld hahah. It’s coming a lot really well I think. I added a 4” by 32” stack with collector and also made a square firebox that’s has insulation on the sides and inside where I made a v bottom. My question is how should I mount this to the cook chamber. Should I just make a plug from where the old hole was then fit up the new firebox and cut a new firebox to cook chamber opening or should I just cut the old opening to fit the new box? Idk why this is breaking my brain so much

Just a few pictures from a couple weeks ago. I work 2nd shift rn and it’s also been 100+ degrees on my days off so I haven’t been able to do as much as I want

Not sure I understand your question but I would just put the new firebox where the old one was. If you are building it to proper size, you may need to alter the throat size but not sure you would need to do much else.

If you're happy with the location of the factory throat, I'd mount it back in the same place. If you feel like you want to move it around, you can plug the old throat and cut your new throat.

Appreciate the feed back and I think it should work fine where the factory throat it it’s just a weird shape. Might try and make it more of a half moon.

Thanks a lot man! It’s been a lot of fun learning. It might not be very pretty but I’m happy with it being in the condition it was in. Still have to fix some warpage in the door that’s always been there and plug some holes in the cc which If anyone has advice I’ll gladly take it. It’s like a 2”x2” hole. That’s not close to being circular

Also I’ve been working 2nd shift for 5 years on the railroad, Been railroading 11 years. It’s no so bad in fall-spring but summer there’s no way I can get some work done before heading to work at 3pm

Okay thank you! That’s what I figured so I lowered it down and hopefully I’ll have it mounted tomorrow. It’s been hard to wake up early on my off days because I’ve been getting off at 3-4am but I’ll make it happen

Do y’all notice the warp in the firebox sidewall? I found a 4’x3’ plate of 1/4” plate at work and it was bent to all hell but it was free so I made the most of it. It’s been more of a pain in the ass trying to make things fit. But with the price of steel I think it’s worth the trial and error

Just about every smoker that I've ever built was from scrap and old steel pipe that was given to me. It was sometimes a real pain to work with but everyone of them turned out great and worked even better. Yours looks great as well, keep up the good work!

thank you! It’s comments like this that makes me want to keep trying and start a new on as soon as I’m done. I’ve had such a fun time learning. Even when I mess up I don’t get to upset, I just try to learn from my mistakes. I’ve always done better working with my hands rather than sitting at a desk.
