UDS firebaskets

Post by Eeny » July 28th, 2018, 3:25 pm

Hi,
I've been wondering what the most efficient design for a firebasket would be. is a mesh basket any better than a solid one where the air enters from the underneath? or perhaps vice versa? Would adding one of these: http://udsparts.com/baskets/uds-drum-bl ... asket.html make any difference between the 2 types?

Being as the UDS is not exactly a finely tuned cooking instrument, you can make your firebasket out of just about any type of steel (barring galv). I make mine out of heavy duty expanded for the bottom and solid sides with a pattern cut out for air flow. I live in Australia and thin expanded is not quite so easy to pick up in small quantities. Heck I'm struggling with any quantities at the moment.
The link you put up is mainly to force the air through the firebox and not let it go up the sides.

So, don't overthink it. Whatever you have on hand or can get cheaply and easily will do.

Learning generally boils down to "Repetition or the avoidance of pain", some people learn by doing, some by watching and some just have to pee on the electric fence.

Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right. Henry Ford

Thanks Ajfoxy. Making either is just as easy so as we're building 2 hunsaker/gateway type clones we're going to build one with a solid firebox and one with a mesh one and run them side by side and see if there's any difference. If one seems to noticable outperform the other we'll make another firebox later

I have the square one the boys sell on UDS parts they work great and it’s easy to make an ash pan for it.
