n00b UDS build

Post by jaydee1445 » December 4th, 2016, 10:53 pm

This is a cross-post from introductions but I'm to lazy retype all the details already posted there. Hope it isn't a no-no [-x
Gathering parts for my first build.
Here is my "kit" $160 before freight.
PREMIUM 22 inch diameter ROUND cooking grate
2" ID air inlet or exhaust for UDS Smoker w/ flange
LavaLock® 12 x 12 x 12 Super PREMIUM EXPANDED Charcoal Basket
3 inch dial Adjustable BBQ Thermometer (2.5" stem) 1/2" NPT

I went with 3 2" inlet/exhaust vs the 1.5s in the kit because I already have a 2" hole-saw, am a cheap b@#$@%d, and trying to stay close to my $200 budget.

Some say the like to put intakes on either side so one is always out of the wind but the UDS in the making ribs video vents are on the front about 45 deg. apart. That seems to be the smart way to do it, easy to regulate openings. I can always turn it out of the wind. Is this the best way to run the 2" intakes I bought?

I'm second guessing the laser cut rack; wondering if the increased surface will sear the meat vs smoking it. I figured I can always get a $15 Weber grate form Home Depot and put the laser cut one down low as a diffuser. Has anyone tied one out yet?

I've read the "golden Rule" is the grate should be more than 24" above the charcoal basket. The other spec I've read is grate 7-8" from the top with a flat lid. Is this correct?

I like the idea of a diffuser. I agree on the intakes too. It's easy to just turn the barrel. You don't really need 2 intakes anyway. Mine only needs a 1/2" open intake cover to maintain 250.

This is the way the boys at HQ do it. The idea of sear isn't a reality because the grate would be only smoking temp. I do like the idea of it as a defuser.

Sweet just as I envisioned .......
Only deviation might be only 3 grate supports. Rumored to be more forgiving to measurement error and grate warpage. I think it would be easier to slip the laser cut "diffuser" in with only 3. I'm always fighting to get grates past the 4 supports on the current P.O.S. I'm using.
Going to order Weber grate from home depot; I have a credit from returned hurricane supplies. ;)

:yth: I only use 3 bolts for my racks, it's easier to balance them that way.

I am 100* sold on the UDS!
I was just an average smoker with my vertical propane (pos) till I met the boys in that beautiful garage during that crappy spring!
Then came the UDS!
That damn thing is so consistent...I don't know what to do while I got it going! Literally set it and forget it. (Well you can't help to salivate while you smell it doin it's thing)
Follow the bar napkin drawings and you will be making a lot of memories!
Don't forget to take pictures or you will be on the wall of spam!

Parts from BSS arrived. Got the standard expanded metal grate :oopssign: guess the laser cut one was out of stock.
I was second guessing that one anyway so not too disappointed. Everything looks great.:kewl:
Picking up drum today. Will post pics soon.
