30 Gallon Build Questions

Post by elkhorn98 » February 8th, 2015, 12:17 am

Going to do a 30 gallon with domed lid for camping, etc. I did a 55 gal with 4-3/4" pipes and it works fine.

What do most people run in 30 gal drums for intakes? And it sounds like the grates fit pretty tight so the grill bolts don't have to be too long. Planning on 2 cooking grates. Planning on building a weber charcoal grate/expanded metal basket with pizza pan attached for ashes. Any other tips?

Check out my travel sized UDS in theme builds. All the Weber Smokey Joe parts work for a 30 gal drum. Hope this helps.

Sorry, mine was a 16 gal drum. :head wall:

I'm trying to find a weber 18.5" kettle or jumbo smokey joe.

Watch Craigslist. That's where I get my parts

Drum came yesterday and it is built like a tank....might be heavier than my 55 gal. It's unlined so the build should be easy. My jumbo joe lid is too small so if I want to use it I need to add a metal ring inside the drum. Has anyone made a removable ring so you could use the flat lid or kettle lid? And I am going with adjustable shelving racks for more versatility.

I haven't made one, but I would use the lid that came with the drum and cut the center out of it and add the domed lid to that ring and that should do. Leave it on the drum while doing the fab work so it stays straight.

ive seen lately where people are taking an old weber grill, and cutting the bottom out, mounting it on a 30 gallon drum, using the same intakes as a regular UDS, best of both worlds, mini uds smoker and grill all in one

Got all my holes drilled and burned the inside and outside with a torch. The rust inhibitor came right off but the factory paint looks like new. I think the factory paint is rated for 450 degrees so I'm considering just painting over it. I sratched it up working on it so it needs a coat or 2. And I have some clear coat that is high heat paint.

I ended up taking the old paint off with wire brush wheel on a grinder. Wasn't too bad. Did 2 coats of high heat semi gloss and 2 coats high heat clear.
