My first UDS build

Post by Swass » June 9th, 2014, 12:58 pm

Hey all. My first time here and I thought I would share my uds build

I wanted to get a new smoker since my old one was one of those cheep smokers they sell at Home Depot

I started with a 55 Gal Drum. I drilled 3 holes 1" wide. 2" from the bottom. 1 is for the rear vent and the 2 are spaced equally on both sides for the side air intakes.

Image

It had Motor Grease in it so I had to do a couple burns.

Image

After the burn It looked like this.

Image

I pressured washed the inside and out.

I ground down the outside to bare metal.

Image

I used high temp header primer on the outside of the barrel and lid.

Image

I also primered the hardware. I used 6 90deg elbo's 3/4" , 2 Black 23" pipes, 2 Ball valves , 4 3/4" plugs , 14 conduit washers, 2 u bolts , 6 stainless steel bolts and washers.

ImageI put a coat of black high heat spray paint on the drum

I used yellow high heat header paint on the lid and pipes.

Image

I also used high temp header paint on the drum black

I'm in Pensilvania so I sorta did a black and yellow theme.

I put a 3/4" pipe joint for the rear vent in with 1 washer on the outside and 1 on the inside.

I screwed on the pipe to a 90deg 3/4" elbow along with the ball valve and attached it the sides using a washer on the inside and out side. It is attached using the u bolt on top that way the pipe will not move when you open and close the valve.

I found the center front and drilled 2 holes for my probes.

I used 2 brass fittings and drilled out the center to allow the probes to go though.

I drilled 4 1" holes and attached the 90deg elbows on the lid using the conduit washers on top and bottom. This will be for ventilation.

I'm using 2 replacement grates from a 22 1/2" webber. I used 3 stainless steel bolts and washers for each grate and spaced them apart equaly around. The top bolt is 3 1/2" down. The bottom bolt is 9 1/2" down. I painted the tops of the the bolts yellow.

And here is the final product

I still need to build an basket and season the pit. I'm smoking ribs Monday.

I will be using my new probe set from Maverick.

You did a fantastic job on that UDS! :kewl:

If it used to hold motor grease would it be a good idea to run a quick batch of cheap chicken parts through there first to make sure it isn't imparting any "less than desirable" flavors to the meat? :D

And on the eighth day God created barbecue …. because he DOES love us and he wants us to be happy. :D

BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.

Nice UDS. I like the yellow/black paint job. With that said, lets get some meat on and start smoking.

What was the idea behind the bottom vent on the back being left open and a different size?

Sorry been gone for a while.

I have the vent the same size as the side ball valve vents 3/4

I open all up to get the temp up then plug it after It reaches the desired temp.

Winter crept up on me so I didn't get a chance to do to many smokes on it. I'm modifying the vents to see if I can control the temps better.

For some reason the temp is either to high or to low. I may have air leaks in the lid.
