Paint Gun Size
I'm getting ready to paint my new cooker but need to buy a new spray gun. I've never shot Rust-oleum High Heat paint out of a HPLV gun before and am wondering what the recommend tip size is. 1.4, 1.8 or 2.3?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Re: Paint Gun Size
I have been using the gravity feed gun from lowes and using the tip it comes with it. I think the gun costs around $45.00

Re: Paint Gun Size
I use the el cheep-o from harbor freight that cost a staggering 14.99
We have a guy at work, that all he does is blast tape and paint. He uses the same gun, last about a year painting about every third day, all day.
Just sayin.
I just thin mine till I get the spray I like.

Re: Paint Gun Size
I was just sayin' the other day that SmokerTom's paint jobs looked like he did 'em with a fifteen dollar paint gun ...
You're so much fun to razz tom!
Actually - painters are like "Q" guys - If you know your equipment you can do amazing things with what seems like the wrong (cheap) gear.

Re: Paint Gun Size
Thanks for spray gun advise guys. It's amazing how many other things you can learn on this site by just asking one simple question. Here is a recap of what I learned.
1. You get a "free" spray gun with the purchase of a forklift
2. You get a "free" Bridgeport with the purchase of a subdivision
3. SmokerTom needs a new paint gun.
4. Rick like to stir the pot.
5. There is a bunch of guys out there that someday I hope to meet in person.
Thanks bro's.

Now we know where that smell came from.

BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.

Re: Paint Gun Size
Actually a 1.8 nozzle would be perfect for the rust oleum . If it acts like it don't want to spray add a little mineral spirits to it thin it down a bit and you'll be good to go 40 - 50 pounds pressure are yer right in there . Good luck , if ya got any paint ?,s feel free to ask me ... I have been painting professionally for over 25 years.(not bragging) I still am learning new things

Re: Paint Gun Size
Old thread, new question.
I thought we used acetone to thin the rust o lieum high heat paint. ??
I havent used it in a while, since I have been using a reducer from the farm store alone with a glosser/hardner.
It seems to get rid of the problem of the paint still finger printing for 2 or 3 weeks.
And it slightly changes the color as the gloss comes out.

LOL. Glad we could clear that up. Oh heck, no one mentioned that we never clean the gun until the next paint.

Re: Paint Gun Size
I've seen the $15 HVLP gun from HF and it looks damn nice for the 10x the price. I usually only shoot lacquers and use a 1.2 needle @ ~30 PSI. If the Rustoleum is oil based, I would use naphtha instead of mineral spirits to shorten dry time.
If it's tourist season, how come I can't shoot 'em?

I am getting ready to paint a santa maria that I am building. Never used a gun before. I am going to use the rustoleum high heat enamel. What ratio of paint:mineral spirits:enamel hardner should I use? I have zero painting experience and I am looking for a place to start from.Fordf100 wrote: ↑June 6th, 2013, 9:44 pmActually a 1.8 nozzle would be perfect for the rust oleum . Depends on a few things. Really, only way to know for sure is start thin and add more paint to thicken. You want good atomization. I would start thinner than maple syrup and go from there. If oil based, use naptha.
