Smoker heat control questions

Postby sag-76 » September 3rd, 2017, 8:15 pm

I'm building a offset reverse flow insulated smoker. What's better at sliding door for the air flow on the heat box or a BALL VALVE SET UP

Welcome aboard!! Either will work fine but if you want 100% total air control you'll need to put a gasket on the FB door and go with the ball valves. The draw back to that is that it'll take a few ball valves depending on the size of the cooker to have the required amount of air flow and ball valves aren't really cheap. Also they stick out and can be a trip hazard. I use sliding intakes and I can choke the fire out if I need or want to and I can build them pretty cheap. I don't know of any builders that use a ball valve on an offset, most use pin wheels or sliders.

OK this is the smoker..... I'm thinking a slide style on the FB but I'm just afraid of the slide getting stuck over time with weather and temp changes also what are the different type of insulation that I can use ive looked into roxul any others ?Image

I haven't had any sticking issues with my pits and my trailer rig sits it the weather a lot, I used it today and it worked great. I believe most guys use roxul because it works great and is the most cost effective. There's a few others out there like kaowool which is ceramic and works great but I believe it cost more.

Yep to all that. Except the part about ball valves I incorporated a 2" on both sides of mine with a slider on the door. I can used a fan controlled by a PID and really only need one. But I did that to run it as a vertical charcoal setup like a UDS, I have yet to do that. I only chimed in to say there's always another way to do this stuff, but everyone isn't crazy enough to try all the options.

Except maybe me.

You can also use fire bricks to insulate the FB, that's what I used in The Wombat. :kewl:
