Chimney lighter

Postby Rick » January 29th, 2012, 5:53 pm

A buddy of mine was hauling a propane cheapo grill to the dump that had rusted out when I noticed it had a side burner that hardly looked used. So I pulled off the valve and burner and threw it in the drawer about 3 years ago. Finally got a chance to put it together to light Edgar a little easier.

Burner and valve...

...it's alive!

That ought to light a charcoal chimney I set on the main grate to get things started.

ONE WORD OF CAUTION! - If you do something like this then do not operate it unless you stay with and watch it for the entire time it's lit - which will probably only be a few minutes. Propane can buildup inside an enclosed area and we'll be reading about you instead of reading your thread! I am as serious as a tax increase about this. I hope to add a flame safety to this in the near future that will shut off the gas if the flame happened to go out. I just haven't seen Frank's thread on how to do that yet... :)

That's awesome. I have been using one of these for a few months because I got tired of waiting for paper to do the job and humidity sucks when you got to deal with it.I was wondering what else was out there.

That's a cool idear right there doc! :kewl:

Most of the time I use a Coghlan fire stick stuck through a hole I drilled in the bottom side of a charcoal chimney - light it with a torch like a fuse and you're golden in a few minutes... prolly a pic of it on one of Edgar's threads or a cook thread of mine ... :)
