What did I get myself into?!!!!!!!

Post by towtruck » December 6th, 2020, 12:04 am

I got talked into restoring a 102 year old tractor for my hometown museum.....big monster hunk of iron. 6.5" bore 2 cylinder 20hp.

I'm going to be busy with this Titan for a while.....

You can see one cam lobe sticking out above the rods at the edge of the case I have open. The lifters are exposed when the valves are open and retreat back into the block when the valves close. Long exposed push rods go back to the exposed rockers and valve springs.

It's a primitive engine like the old hit and miss engines. No oil sump, exposed valves and lifters, open push rods, 100% loss oil system....meaning all the oil used to lube the bearings hits the ground....there is no oil pan. The gears you see in the picture are...Big gear is the cam gear riding on the crank gear. Small gear is for the magneto.

It's over 500 cubic inches ...and just two cylinder!

This looks fun. Never worked on old engines, but they are fun.

I cannot imagine running it and leaving a small trail of oil behind you.

Internal engine pics look pretty good. Surprised it looks that good.

Is this going to be a full running restoration when you are done?

Full restoration. The engine and transmission were rebuilt once in the 70's. I shouldn't have too much internal work to do unless the cylinders have more rust than what I could see. I am going to do it all up right with full repairs and a full paint job. It will be a running tractor ready for work when I'm done with it. I will have to go through the magnets, oil pump, fuel pump, rebuild the fuel and water tanks, re-bush the front axle, I have a long list of to-do's on it.

I got a little deep in this project.......going to re-ring it and do a valve job. Each ring will cost $20 and there are 8 of them. I'll have to enlarge the top ring groove and put two in the place of one to get the gaps right. I will chuck these pistons up in my lathe to widen that top ring groove. I had to use my front end loader to lift that head out of the tractor.

Got big pistons?

Yes, and I'm missing the belt drive...it was a treadle powered unit. I am running a small electric motor off the head to turn it. You can see it behind the barrel in the barrel vise here....
funny that barrel is from a 1912 gun, the lathe is 1910 and the tractor is 1918....

I’ve got to bite the bullet and sign up for some auctions. This and a Bridgeport. Saving up my pennies. Then a new shop lol. Quickly running out of room.

Foot tall head, that's a bit taller than the last big motor I worked on! An IL6 diesel on a bus, the heads were split into 2 x 3cyl as they were that heavy. Each was about 3 foot long but only around 6in tall. It was mid engined with the motor laid down flat, so was a PITA to work on. ;)

A buddy of mine worked in a rail maintenance yard, it was fun watching him having to use a crane just to move one single piston around!

Are the ring gaps a mile out that you need to mod the pistons? Is there enough meat above the top ring land to play with?

The top ring grooves are worn. I will be cutting them wider and installing two narrower rings in the top groove. There is plenty of meat above the top groove to widen the groove.

I stopped working on old iron about five/six years ago due to my worn out body.....this project was a younger me wanting to dive in and save the machine.....this will be the absolute last project of it's kind I take on.

Famous last words. :)

I'll be interested to see how this turns out.

Yesterday I separated the rods off the pistons and pulled the rings off. I ordered a new set of rings for them. I have to chuck these pistons up in my lathe and cut the top groove to fit a stock ring plus a .030" spacer. The ring groove is worn and has .014" of play in the ring when only .003" is where it should be. I also had to make a valve spring compressor as this head is huge. I borrowed a compressor from my neighbor that he used on truck diesels and it was 3" too short to work. I had to take one valve out at a time and clean them up and lap the seats. Everything cleaned up really well.

Today I worked on the intake and fuel mixer and finished cleaning up the head. I still have to work over the head bolt nuts yet. There are some water injection parts that need to get put back on the tractor and I found all the pieces today and will be installing those onto the intake but will dummy them up as the water injection will never be used again. At least it will look correct even if it does not function.

There is so much clean up work yet to do. I need to make up some gaskets for the mixer and intake and get that all back together. I also need to get to the store and buy a new cutter for my lathe. I don't want to cut on those pistons until I have a new cutter in hand.

I need a good day to clean up the barrels and face of the block and prep that for the next stage.
