newb smoker builder looking for advice

Post by SteveJonesMO » March 14th, 2018, 6:49 pm

Howdy!

I've come into possession of a half dozen used sheet pan cabinets:

I'm planning to convert one of them into an electric smoker, and if that works well probably a couple more for friends and family.

My tentative idea is to insulate them (I want to be able to use them in very cold, windy weather), heat them electrically controlled by a smoker controller like this, using an external smoke generator like this, and a low volume fan of some sort to help keep the heat and smoke relatively evenly distributed through the chamber.

I will be trolling the "electric smoker" thread to flesh out the details and seek advice.

Thanks!

Welcome aboard!! It's probably do-able if you have a big enough element.

Welcome to the crew. Yes, probably a bit of research into how much "electric" you will need to achieve what you are aiming for.

Learning generally boils down to "Repetition or the avoidance of pain", some people learn by doing, some by watching and some just have to pee on the electric fence.

Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right. Henry Ford

That is a huge volume....probably big enough to mover your “external” smoke generator to the inside and make 1 self contained unit.

Welcome to the crew! It might be easier to split it into 2 chambers so you could even the temperature. Just thinking as tall as that is it may be a problem.
