I am in awe that you made your own welder. Very impresive.

I have to say that I'm not that brave, this is just an example of what the eye can behold when going for a wander in the local scrap market in Kanengo.

My guys don't seem to have that much interest in Health & Safety though I have to say.

I have a guy by the name of Lipenga who is doing all of the cutting and welding for me, he has never seen the likes of this before and is pretty keen to see what the final outcome will be.

This is definitely going to be an interesting build.
OH&S has no place in that workshop space. No guard on grinder, dodgy as wiring on the home-made welder. I think at the end of the build it would be nice if you could say :There were no fatalities in the building of this smoker" :D

I don’t see a welding hood either. I hope he can see the finished results.

Ah R.C. he has the shades on. That's got to count for points.

But at the end of the day, he probably has been turning out very acceptable work for a long time. One has to take one's hat of to the ingenuity of third world entrepreneurs. They look for ways to do the job as opposed to whinging they don't have the "correct" tools to do the job. I'll give them kudo's for that.

They really impressed me when they put a neat fold in 8mm steel.

That is impressive. Did you find out how they put that fold in 8mm plate? Heck I might not need a 15 grand bender... :D

They just cut into the sheet (but not through it) with a grinder along where they wanted to fold it secured one side of the fold with welds and then just beat the thing with a hammer till it folded over.

Ahh, there's a feller on youtube. Allen, of Allen's welding and woodorking or something like that. Does all his fabrication with oxy torch and grinders etc. He also uses that method. Absolute magnificent what he achieves with simple tools.

Coming along nice. What's the two angle iron bits for?

It appears to be some type of hinge mechanism with maybe a counterweight on the other end ?

Yup it's exactly that, still have to add the counterweight though, the front hatch is pretty weighty :D
