Wood Question
Happy New Year smoking crew!
I came across some 'Silver Oak' on craigslist here where I live in Hawaii. Not very common in my area and I was wondering is silver oak good or OK to use for smoking? I don't know much about oak so just checking the collective knowledge base here on the smokebuilder.com
Thanks for any information in advance.
edit: Mods not sure if this the right spot I noticed a wood section after I posted. Please move if you feel its appropriate.

Gee I did read a few things that would almost say. Not to use it. It says there is cyanide in the flowers or leaves. Surely not the last word but do some looking first

Yep....saw that too but it does appear to have several generic names but looks like they are the same species.

Re: Wood Question
That is one high tech photo.
I have no idea. My interruption was meant only for comedic relief in response to Puffs photo.
Carry on.

Re: Wood Question
Pennywise,
Were it not for comic relief, I would be ready to go to Acapulco and dive off the cliff...AND I'M NO DIVER ! Besides, I now have 35 years experience living in the Northeast Corridor where they say " F' em if they can't take a joke ".
By the way...I'm NOT here by choice but once the tree starts putting out roots...it gets near impossible to walk away
Keep up the good work !

Re: Wood Question
Oak is good for smoking, but silver oak is oak in name only. True oak will start with the genus Quercus. If the silver oak offering is cheap I would say try burning some for a bonfire or something non-critical to see if it puts off any noxious fumes. Most woods are safe to burn, with the only real exception I know being things in the Toxicodendron genus. Many plants contain compounds we know to be poisonous, such as cherry, Apple, black walnut, etc. but very few carry those compounds in a way that can be volitized by burning.

I have no idea what MTF said, but
. He's the forester, he has to be right.

BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.

Wood Question
Sure I just beat you to it Tom. Let me simplify it for you Czar, burn it and see what happens! I mean, what's the worst that could happen? Then again if Kekoa doesn't report back we may well know what is the worst that could happen
