Sanding Metal

Post by Mo Smoke » October 19th, 2017, 6:30 pm

My smoker could really use a paint job. But for now I’m just looking to touch up the surface areas that have rust on the surface. What type of sander and sandpaper should I use? I thought about getting a random orbit sander but I’m afraid it will leave swirls on the surface that will show in the paint job. Also need to know what kind of sander would be good for getting into small areas, and rounded areas. The main cook chamber is round and firebox is square. Another question should I sand the inside of the cooker..? I’m not going to paint the inside, just oil it.

Smoke em if ya got em.

I wouldnt worry about the inside really. as far as what to use on the outside goes, I would use 120 grit sandpaper if it is rough surface rust and use 60 grit if it is not as bad. I like using an electric disc sander myself and use paper by hand in tight areas.

I have a "mouse" for tight areas, it's a small orbital sander with a pointed front.

I have a feeling that Frank got the grit round the wrong way, 60 for bad areas & 120 for the finer stuff. I might be wrong as I always get nervous contradicting OB1's comments, lol. :D

It's ok, it gets the job done. You wouldn't want to do the whole smoker with it, just the corners, etc.
