Let's hear about your ideas for smokers and grills.

Thick Vertical Single Pipe -1st build

Postby Patman » January 29th, 2012, 11:29 pm

This is my first time building a Smoker. I have average welding and cutting skills but lots of time to do it. I have a huge pipe with ends on it and legs that was given to me. It is 5/8" thick, 24" outer diameter, and 63" tall. It is old and rusty. How clean does the inside really need to be before using? I don't want to take up too much room in my backyard and I do have a crane and forklift so I'm going to try a vertical single pipe design to minimize the space that will be taken up. I have tried using differnt "Smoker Calculators" but none of them are for this design and I really don't want an offset box taking up more room.

i like it!!!!! the only thing that concerns me are the double opening door when you cut that sucker its going to spring and you may have a hard time with that. as far as the pit calculator i would not worry about it that much i would check out a few uds style builds and think of it that way. in fact i would would valve the air inlets just like a uds and run a 2-3'' stack on top with it being 5/8 it may take a bit getting up to temp but i will sure hold it when she gets there. this sounds to be a really solid build please post pics as she unfolds :welcome:
So you think that money is the root of all evil. Have you ever asked what is the root of all money?

X2! What ks and EK said. I like the UDS angle. I think that a 3" stack and either a 3" inlet or 4- 1" air inlets would be a good starting point.

I am thinking of making the difuser plate a 2 inch tall circular tray to hold water and catch drippings, With a 1" drain in the middle of the tray that drops down 1" then 45s out the side of the tank. Then for the diffuser, I can drill holes all the way around the water tray. Maybe a 3" lip outside of the water tray. with 1 1/2" holes zig zaged all the way around it.

I also thought of making a preheater cheater out of an old outdoor fish fry burner I have laying around. Would allow me to go out and crank on some propane to get the thick metal heated up, before I throw some wood on it for my smoke.

Welcome Patman! Cool idea. That thing should be amazing at holding heat! I agree with those above on the uds theory. My new guy opinion would be concerned with getting a good seal on the double door, but plenty of time thinking about it will net a positive result. Propane preheat is an excellent idea also.

Just my .02.

Cant wait to see pictures of the build :rulz:

The stack can be flush.

The doors can be delt with, if they spring. It may be a tough road but doable.

If it was mine I would want a butterfly damper to totally shut off the fire from the cook area, for when the doors open.

If you dont have a damper, your gonna flood the fire with air and it could be really easy to have the fire run away.

Just my thoughts.
Go Big or Go Home.....Thats what I say.
