T-Shaped UDS Style Smoker/Charcoal Grill

Post by Fishless Mickey » May 16th, 2014, 8:22 am

Howdy Smokerbuilders. I am getting ready to start a new project for my Mom. Her requested parameters are: Light and easy for her to handle, smoker and a charcoal grill, and uses very little charcoal/wood. I have attached a rough sketch and pics of the tanks. The tanks are 16"x24"(21gallons)CC, & 13"x24"(13.5gallons)FB. Both are 1/8" steel i think. Not included in the sketch are: grease drain/air inlet piping and valve at the low point of the baffle "v", latches and 1/2"x1/8" angle iron to seal the CC door. Depending on weight and how difficult it is, i may add a counter balance to the CC door. I am open to any suggestions and will post updates as the project progresses.

The grill will be mounted in a 3/4" or 1" square tubing frame. I'll do my best to keep it light and manageable without sacrificing durability. I have an old kitchen table-top to make some nice wrap around panels out of. The only real weight will be in the base and wheel mounts to keep it from being too top heavy.

So...... Mom said the grill wasn't big enough for her. I had to Biggy-Size it. Thankfully it was plenty early in the process. Ill finish the small one at a later date. Here are the updates. I have hinges and a frame on it too now but will wait to post next when I am ready to paint.

Nearly finished. I just have the wrap around shelf, 1 1/2" air control ball valve, CC door seal + thermometer and she's ready for delivery! I'll post the final pics soon. Test burn surprised me. The center was colder by 8 degrees than the side of the main grate. I may have put too much angle in the fire baffle.

All done! The wood shelf will only likely last a year or so. I gave it three coats of clear rustoleum exterior. I went with high temp rtv for the cc gasket. No latch. The weight of the kid holds it closed firmly. I may add a latch to it down the road when I change her shelf out for Hardie Board.

Haha typo. Although she is raising a bunch of kids, I don't think she will need to use one for a CC door weight. Thanks fellas. She cooked us some BBQ chicken upon delivery. The charcoal grate got plenty of oxygen with the air valve open. CC got up to 480degrees with the CC lid closed. Neat little set up. I think I'll make me one now. After putting the word out there, I ended up with 6-7 small tanks to work on. My wife said no more tanks a couple tanks ago :oopssign:

That's a NICE looking rig there! :kewl:

If you want to fix the temp variance drill a 1" hole toward the center of the baffle plate and tap it for pipe thread. Screw a "close" union into them to prevent grease from going down into the fire. That will let just a little of the heat rise directly to the center of the grate and should even out the temp immediately. Start with just one at first then "tune it with more holes if needed. jm2cw …. :D

I think the temperature issue was thermometer related. I delivered the grill to Mom on July 3rd. She said she hasn't used her kitchen stove since then.
