A lesson in economics as taught by Skimpy bag Bob and Jeff the Jew

Post by SAFETYHARBORREDNECK » November 7th, 2017, 4:59 pm

( names and occupations were changed to protect the guilty)
I was in my early 20's when I moved up to Charlotte,NC from the depths of the Everglades in Naples,Fl.
I met another young man named Jeff who sold "BBQ rub".
Most other sellers of "BBQ rub" sold there's in 1/4 ounce baggies for $35.
Jeff,in his infinite wisdom, thought that by selling his for $40 and decreasing the size of his baggies (he would make 5 baggies out of an ounce, instead of the usual 4 baggies per oz.) That he would make a killing. And on paper it seemed so.
But the people were not happy with small portions and high prices and soon the people nicknamed him Jeff the Jew and rarely bought from him.
As a side story, I was at a bonfire somewhere just out of town and someone mentioned we were in the"deep south".
Me, just coming from as far south as someone could come from, laughed at him and said,"deep south, man Y'all are Yankees where I come from".
We laughed.
Anyway, it wasn't till I moved back to Florida and met a young man who would soon become known as Skimpy bag Bob,who operated the same as Jeff.Small portions and high prices.
Hardly anyone would buy their "BBQ rub" from him.
And none of this sank in to me.
I was young and dumb.
By this time, everybody raised their prices to $40 per 1/4 oz.
THEN came along Mike the Millionaire.
Selling HIS "BBQ rub" for $35 per 1/4oz with an extra pinch thrown in free!
He was busier than a one legged man at an arse kickin contest!!!
While Skimpy bag Bob was hardly selling any.
It FINALLY sank in.
Give the people good portions and fair prices and they'll beat your door down.
Give them smaller portions and higher prices, you won't see them again!
So WHO will YOU be?
Skimpy bag Bob or
Mike the Millionaire???
The moral of the story here can be used in other aspects of life as well.
Hope you enjoyed it, it's a true story and life lesson learned the hard way.

Learning generally boils down to "Repetition or the avoidance of pain", some people learn by doing, some by watching and some just have to pee on the electric fence.

Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right. Henry Ford
