High School Smoker build

Post by ifallswelder » April 27th, 2012, 7:55 pm

We needed a big project for the last quarter of the school year. First came the discada, it worked great and we have orders for 5 more by the end of the school year! Now we are starting a side firebox smoker inspired by an Arizona BBQ Outfitters design. It is 24x24x42 tall and has a 24x24x17 tall fire box. It will eventually have 4 shelves and acouple of hooks in the top to hang items from. Here are pics of the discada and the first build pics of the smoker. Please keep in mind that these are high school juniors doing all of the fabbing and welding, luckily for me I get to take it home when it is done!! Oh, the guilt I feel!

The kids added a few more elements this week. We got the rails for the shelves in and we are building the shelves. Also put a swing out holder in the corner, thought it might be good for hanging sausages or a bird from it.

Looking good ifall!

Question on the hook - Is there a divot in the hook arm bearing to hold it in the out position?

When you get that cooker hot and go to hang a 14 pound bird (or whatever) on it you don't want that hook moving on you and with a good coat of grease - it will want to. Easier to do now than to add it later.

for what it's worth :)

Here ia what we have gotten done so far this week. We went with the custom handles, still trying to figure out how to insulate the ones on the firebox so they do not get to hot.

Made a little more progress this week. The kids got the racks built and the latches for the main door fabbed up. We are still trying to figure out the latch for the fire box door. Any Ideas?? We also got started on 4 Discada's, I will post some pics in that forum.

Knowing what i know now, if i was to go back in time and redo school. The last thing i would do, would be shop class, LMAO..... I would be the he whore for sure.

Aside all that, smoker looks great. The kids have an awesome teacher.
