Dino B, if you are referring to a baffle plate as Frank mentioned in my opinion they are an option if you want one but not needed in the performance of a cooker.

Well if you were meaning a dampener, then in my opinion no. But if you are going with a plate off of your fire box to your tuning plates or reverse flow plate let me add that you should angle it down away from the firebox to make grease run away from the heat. :welder:
