500 gallon dream

Post by Millertime » December 3rd, 2017, 2:57 pm

Brought this baby home on 10-27-17, but I have been dreaming about it and planning it for much longer. The dream is to have it on a trailer, and eventually work my way into a food truck or cater some events. Long term goal is a brick and mortar smokehouse...when I win the lotto.

The math I have done says this is 528 gallon. I am so happy it was a water tank and not propane. Not sure I would have tackled cutting into if it was. Just like most, I am working on a low budget and not very much time. My time goal is to have the smoker built before Superbowl weekend. I'm not counting on the trailer part just yet.

Here are some pics. I'll be asking for calculator help, in the near future. She is 88" long, with a 42" diameter. BTW...her name is Dixie!!!

Looking good...

I see you're putting the flanges on the inside. I don't have a dog in the fight, but if you don't have a cover over it water will get in it when it rains. Also it is very hard to get a gasket to seal the top edge of the door because the edge of the door drags just a touch on the flange with most hinges. I only said that stuff because I want to help you. But you can do it any way you want and I won't bother you again about it. lol

I'm looking for all the input I can get. So thank you for that. I hadn't thought about the water factor. My old smoker has an overlap on the outside and it doesn't leak any smoke. If I can get my welds to look good, I may have to do an outside flange too.

There you go, you can use gasket material of some sort then and that baby will seal up great.
