New builder trying to build offset with 55 Gallon Drum smoking chamber

Post by rab62184 » August 17th, 2017, 2:15 pm

Hey guys, i'm new here, and I am looking to build an offset smoker using a 55 gallon steel drum for my cooking chamber and a 100 lb propane tank (trimmed down) for the fire box. I know the steel drum is thin an flimsy, but i was wondering if it might work? I'm looking to save money here, and my only other option would be to go with another 100lb propane tank for the cooking chamber. I wanted the 55 gallon drum because of the extra room i would have. any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'd like to say "Welcome to the crew!"

Now I will say, it may save you a few bucks up front to use a drum, but when it causes you a lot of grief and rusts out. You will wish you had looked around for the right stuff to begin with and have the rig that you will be proud of and it may out last you.

Welcome! I think Rodcrafter has a valid point, another option may be to use the drum and build an uds to hold you over and satisfy your building cravings while you continue treasure hunting for your offset parts.
