I made a straight edge out of some 50mm flat bar & clamp it down & I agree with RC, a good dryer makes a difference. :kewl:

Air dryer is the way to go for less slag.
And either a straight edge or cnc plasma for ... well straight edges.

Having an air drier is great but if you are like most and can't afford one, here are some ideas. Drain your air compressor tank after you run it for awhile. This gets the collected moisture out of it. A moisture trap before the plasma cutter can help. I just used a simple inline disposable spray gun filter because I had them. You can get a desiccant drier on eBay for less than $20.00.

Looks at a piece of meat and wonders how many ways can I smoke that.

I built one from 2 inch sch 40 pipe. Supply from compressor goes to the center top to bottom. Angled downward at a 45 degree angle fitting welded into the pipe. Fill pipe with steel wool. Bottom of pipe gets a ball valve to drain water and top of pipe gets fitting for air supply back to a tornado dryer. Then a desiccate filter neither of which ever get any moisture. Ever. I will on occasion get condensation in the tank when it's very hot outside.

So when I go to put my rack in the firebox should I put it above the vents or next to the vents?

The bottom of my fire grate is slightly above my air intakes. I don't know if it makes a difference or not but I figured that it would force the air through the fire. I don't know anything about the science of it all but it seems to work fine for my pit . I'm sure some of the experts on this site will chime in.

Yup - put the rack above the vents to get the best combustion.

I'll try to post pics tomorrow. Once I mount the fire drawer and fix up the damper I'll be done with the fire box.

I only get to work on this beast 30 to 45 minutes a day. Every time I think I'm almost there I think of 5 more things to do.

I'm currently working on the damper. I finally found a 1/2" spring for the 1/2" round stock handle. I have an idea of how it should work. Spring, washers, rod under tension. Coolio.

Next thing I'm researching is latches. I really don't want a piece of flat bar in a notch. I'm also not an engineer. More like redneck trailer park engineer. I am looking for simple cam latches.
Hope all the made sense.

I've never run a firebox this big before. Is 15" from the bottom the fire tray box to the top of the fire box enough height to not melt the top of the firebox? My intakes can be rewelded and moved 3" down but in the grand scheme of things will 3" be a big deal?ImageImage

I tacked it all in just to see what it would look like. I think it's fine. My other cooker is a top loader. I can put stumps in that fb.
