Building a new smoker-side fire box or no?

Post by Newsmoker » August 11th, 2012, 5:14 pm

I have an all stainless steel box with door (4 1/2' tall X 2' wide X 2' deep). I am wanting to build a smoker out of it and I have no idea of the benefits of a side fire box. I saw from one of the other postings that the firebox should be 1/3 the size of the smoking chamber. If I was planning on connecting the two using a short piece of black iron pipe with a damper in the pipe, what size would y'all recommend?

At this point it's easy to talk about alternatives.
The dimensions you list here make me think of a vertical ... Just a firebox underneath it with front door for access.
Plenty of room for several slide out racks inside.
This will take less floor space anywhere you put it and should be easier to stabilize on heat once you are on to it... just a thought... :-B

I would go with Ricks Idea if it were me unless you wanted to make that box a horizontal offsset or reverse flow?

You're correct in that it would be vertical. The only reason I had considered a side box was thinking of drippings causing a problem (mess). Don't know if I should be concerned with that or not. What is a reverse flow? I was thinking with the pipe offset to the right with about a 6" extension. What do you think?

One more question. Do y'all use any type of sealer (that won't disintegrate) around the door to prevent smoke loss? This is a great box in that it has plenty of room for some vertical shelves (butt or ham on top, turkey below-excellent juice dripping on the bird). It is hinged on the right side, stainless rods to handle linkage to hold door shut.
