Building smoker boxes, or any boxes

Postby Rockinar » February 5th, 2018, 5:37 pm

When building say a 20" square firebox, do you normally fabricate a bunch of squares so its all outside corner joint to weld? What would be the most simple way? It would seem like that would be tricky with all the distortion. I saw on the Shirley Fab videos it looked like they were tacking in braces to hold everything square at 90 as best as possible. Seems like a good idea.

I'm afraid I don't understand the question....sorry if my answer is off-base.

Obviously, to make a 20 inch box I would cut 6 pieces of material that are 20x20 and then weld them together. It would depend on material and use if I would use braces. On my firebox, I just used plate.

:yth: I use a couple of framing squares while tacking everything together and then weld it up. I haven't used any bracing and never had any real issues with distortion.

A man who is able to learn from his mistakes builds knowledge.

I just happen to make a LOT of mistakes.

I use large welding magnets, good old pipe clamps, then I measure a lot diagonals to make sure its square and watch that it does not move as I tack it.

I find open corner welds easiest. Tack tack tack is key. Along with a flat work surface it’s hard to go wrong. I still manage to go wrong but that’s usually on the last weld.

If I didn't go wrong I would be very surprised.
